Sterile technique basics for agar, grain, and grow bags
Sterile technique is simple in theory: keep contamination out while you work. The hard part is staying patient.
Before you start
- Clean the table.
- Set up your SAB or flow hood if you use one.
- Wipe tools and surfaces.
- Keep sterile items sealed until the moment you use them.
While you work
- Move slowly.
- Do not wave your hands over open plates, jars, or bags.
- Do one step at a time.
- If something looks wrong, stop and reset.
